The Case for Mallet style Putters
Mallet putters are very popular right now, because of the extreme stability a mallet offers the golfer during the putting stroke. A mallet putter is well balanced, has a bigger putting head than blade type putters, and almost always are heavier than a regular putter.
Putters in the mallet style also have more MOI than traditional putters. What this means is that the clubhead will twist less on an off-center hit, so the ball stays on a straighter line and doesn’t lose as much of it’s speed than when struck by a conventional putter. Mallet type putters typically include elaborate alignment systems that help you aim short putts with ease . Some of the most innovative designs are the Odyssey putters, especially their new White Hot XG line of mallet putters.
Due to the heavier weight and higher MOI, mallet putters always feel solid, even on less than optimal contact. If you normally use a conventional putter, you may be surprised at how simple it is to hit the ball solidly and how little force is needed. It will take some practice to prevent the ball from racing past the hole .
Some traditionalists feel that a blade putter offers more feel to the golfer . WHile partially true, other golfers feel the higher MOI of mallet patters actually translates into considerable feel, even on lengthy putts or those tricky “touch” putts. One of the most important aspects of touch putts is getting the ball started on the right line, and high MOI mallet putters do that job perfectly.
An area where mallet putters really shine is on short putts under 8 feet. These are the money putts in golf. The more of this length putt you make during a round, the better your score will be . And all of the features of mallet type putters – heavy weight , high MOI and easy-to-use alignment aids – translate into making more short putts that can otherwise ruin a good round .
Mallet putters work best with a simple , straight-through putting stroke. If that’s not your stlyle , it doesn’t mean a mallet putter is not for you . However it may prevent you from enjoying all the design benefits mallet putters offer . But if you putt with a longer, arcing swing, you may want to look at some the newer model putters.
New Mallet designs might seem quite weird , but there are still quite a few with a traditional look. If you can put up with the large, geometric shapes of some of the newer-style mallet putters (like the Sabertooth putter ), you will find them to be a great boon to your golf game. If you prefer a more demure look, some of the more conventional mid-mallet putters may be a better fit for you .
Pro golfers have changed to higher MOI mallet-style putters for some time . Is it time for you to give them a try , too .
