Networking Tip: The Most Effective 30 Second Self Introduction Ever Heard!
How is there a referral in every elevator speech?
Self introductions will get you referrals at every business networking event you attend, after you read this article. EVERY SINGLE TIME! Really? Yep. Here’s how.
There are three things you’ll need to make this work:
1. Paper
2. An eagerness to help others
3. A follow-up database
All you have to do is: Listen to every self introduction delivered with an intention to help that person with a referral.
Here’s a side note about referrals. Not every referral will be a direct customer. You can refer:
- Networking organizations, other than the one that you are attending
- Business Resources
- Great Books
- Referral partners
- Clients
- Expertise and Advice
- Go wild and use your imagination
At a business networking event, 95% of the people are worrying about what to say during their own 30 second self introduction. In fact, most people are so deathly afraid of public speaking that they’re having minor anxiety attacks waiting for their turn. Regardless of how “good or bad” the elevator pitch, you’ll get an idea of what they do in their business and will get an intuitive sense of how to help them grow their business.
Take a note for everyone that attends the event. Write down their name and what comes to mind during their self introduction to help them grow their business. After the meeting, mixer or business networking event contact the person and share the referral. Make sure you really connect and get to know the person. When and if appropiate, add them to your data base and newsletter list.
Using this method, for every 20 people you contact you should receive anywhere from one to three direct referrals from every business networking event you attend. These leads will typically show up within 45 to 60 days. Try it and see what happens. By helping others, you’ll feel better about yourself.
Why only Business and Business Networking Events?
Only Business and Business Networking Events are Published by NetworkingEventFinders.
Here’s the reason why:
- Business and Networking is our passion
- Our talents are Business and Networking
- We’re tired of searching through festivals, concerts and single’s events to find business networking events
- We’re maturing and our ‘party days’ are almost over
- We’re don’t want to attend business networking events that are really MLM recruiting events, buiness seminars and opportunity meetings.
- While searching for business networking events we found way too many really cool website that sucked up all our time
- We got tired of having to “sign up” and fork over our email addresses to get business networking event information
- We got tired of “self interest” sites where publishers mainly promoted their own events, programs and seminars
Mindy Selinger and Terry Hall, 18 months ago, set out to build a global business networking websites where it’s free to find and to list local networking events. Networking Event Finders was born. Our beta site launched in October 2008 and our full launch happened in March 2009.
We’ve learned a lot about what does work and what doesn’t work for an on line business. We’ve learned in this economic climate that NetworkingEventFinders is needed, now more than ever. There is a need for an independent publisher of Business and Business Networking Events and we’re filling that need. We’ve proven our idea. We’ve proven our ability to design, maintain and promote a Network of 60+ Business Networking Sites. We’ve proven that 800+ people a day are looking for what we publish. Pretty good for just over a year. As we go into the holiday season of 2009, our popularity is positioned to explode. And we need your help.
The best part is that we’re offering a Win/Win opportunity. These are the three ways you can help:
1. Let your networks know that we’re here and invite them to add their networking events to our calendars.
2. Consider being a Local Editor for your networking guide.
3. Help us find advertisers.
By helping in any of these areas, you’ll help us improve our publication so that we offer more business networking event and we’ll have a better variety of events and the speed of our development will snowball. When these happen we all win with greater exposure and more options to grow and expand our businesses.
Business Networking in Maryland: Moms, Inc
Talk about necessity being the ‘mother’ of invention… Moms Inc.org was started three years ago by Nancy Daniel for moms who have a home-based business or want to start one.
During this past summer I received several inquiries looking for kid friendly business networking groups for work at home moms in Denver so I put out a national query. I didn’t get very many responses. I’m so happy to hear about this one. Usually I would not put a local group on the national newsletter but I am hoping the publicity will shed light on more small groups like this. We want to get them on the calendar and give them some exposure!
Stay-at-home moms running home-based businesses face unique obstacles. They’re working in two unrelated and frequently conflicting endeavors, they need a place where they can go and receive guidance and support. Groups like Moms, Inc are tailored toward answering a particular need that more and more women are experiencing. Moms, Inc is bringing together mothers with at-home businesses and connecting them into the rich resources and knowledge base of other women who are making the same lifestyle choice. Most Moms, Inc. chapters have one very informal gathering per month. Annual dues are minimal and meetings are free. The group is mostly mothers of young children, so kids are always welcome. Membership has blossomed from a mere handful three years ago to 3 chapters in Baltimore, Bethesda & Silver Spring, Maryland. Moms, Inc. is for networking, support & friendship. Family are Moms, Inc. members first priority, but they also take their businesses seriously. Please leave a comment and let us know of any grass roots, community business networking groups that our readership should know about.

An alternative to the games for kids on the Internet is a new and exciting pastime, the trading card game. Kids have the opportunity to pit their skills against others in real life, and interact in ways that aren’t possible in the online world.
One major attraction to the fun provided by a trading card game is the art that’s available on these cards. Artists from all over the world contribute to the design and sometimes to the very concept of the character. The collectible card game fad is also popular due to the value of the trading cards, and the trading potential. If you keep the cards in great shape, their value can increase over the years. So besides a large number of hours of fun, you have an asset that can connect you with other fans over time.
Strategic gameplay with games for kids is also good for the imagination and improving creative skills. Kids have to use intellect and wit to beat out their opponents. A plus is that a card game takes no batteries, no computer, no special appliances. Just people! And the cards of course.
The tales behind the games also make for great entertainment. Perhaps the player will be protecting an entire planet from destruction. Maybe they will be able to act out a hero role in the activity. From fantasy to the now popular sci-fi themes, you can find anything you like in the way of concepts for games. Most collectible card games are also family-friendly. This means the entire family can get together for some quality time and share in the enjoyment. With some games providing positive messages, such as saving the environment, there’s a lot to be gained for everyone.
